NHS Patients

Everyone should be able to access good-quality NHS dental service. At The Smile Clinic we are accepting new NHS patients.

Our Mill Road Practice is on one level so has full disabled access.  Our St Botolphs Street Practice is located on the 1st Floor, we have a stairlift for access and wide doorways.Guide Dogs are allowed on the premises. If you are unable to move from your chair without assistance please advise us as we may have to refer you to the community Dental Suite who have a ramp to enable them to treat you in your chair for your comfort.

How to join us as an NHS Patient If you would like to join our practice as an NHS patient please pop in to the surgery or give us a call, it only takes a few minutes.  We can then make you your first check- up appointment with the Dentist. We will endeavour to let you see the dentist of your choice, though this will depend on their capacity at that time.

Your dentist must make clear to you which treatments can be provided under the NHS and which can only be provided on a private basis so you can make an informed choice. Where alternative private options have been considered then your treatment plan should detail these options. You'll be asked to sign the plan and you'll be given a copy to keep. Decisions about which treatment is appropriate for you will be based upon a clinical assessment and clinical judgement. Your NHS dentist will offer you a treatment option that is clinically appropriate.

At The Smile Clinic we aim to see as many of our patients the same day who have a genuine dental emergency whether they are under an open course of treatment or not.  It will be classed as a dental emergency if you have swelling to the face or neck, had a blow to the face, have lost a filling and are in pain, have a broken or sharp tooth that is cutting the tongue or a throbbing tooth that is keeping you awake at night.  We offer an emergency ‘walk-in, sit & wait service’ for all patients, no appointment necessary.

NHS Opening Times

Our contracted hours for NHS patients are from Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 4:00pm. Outside of these hours all patients are treated on a private basis only.

NHS dental charges from 1 April 2021

The charge you pay depends on the treatment you need to keep your mouth, gums and teeth healthy. You will only ever be asked to pay one charge for each complete course of treatment, even if you need to visit your dentist more than once to finish it – either Band 1, Band 2 or Band 3. If you have to be referred to another dentist, for another, separate course of treatment, you can expect a second charge. Some minor treatment, including having stitches removed or repair to dentures (if they can be mended), are free.

If you are not exempt from charges, you should pay one of the following charges for each course of treatment you receive:
Band 1 course of treatment - £23.80

This covers an examination, diagnosis (eg X-rays), advice on how to prevent future problems, a scale and polish if needed, and application of fluoride varnish or fissure sealant. If you require urgent care, even if your urgent treatment needs more than one appointment to complete, you will only need to pay one Band 1 charge.
Band 2 course of treatrment - £65.20

This covers everything listed in Band 1 above, plus any further treatment such as fillings, root canal work or if your dentist needs to take out one or more of your teeth.
Band 3 course of treatment - £282.80

This covers everything listed in Bands 2 and 2 above, plus crowns, dentures and bridges.
Free NHS dental treatments or help with health costs

Please note that an emergency appointment may be charged at an extra band 1: £23.80
